A major new residential development planned for the RAD is bringing with it a slew of new retail businesses. The development is called the RAD Lofts, by developer Harry Pilos.
Pilos was awarded three-quarters of a million dollars in taxpayer dollars by Asheville City Council on Tuesday. It will come in the form of incentives, reports David Forbes of Asheville Blade. Here’s a brief description of the development at the corner of Clingman Avenue and Roberts Street from siteworkstudios:
The development boasts 209 residential units on a 2-level parking structure enveloped with 53,000 sf of retail, live/work, and office space. Situating the over 200,000 sf of building within the context of a thriving artist community takes special care, and good urban design skills.
Site details such as pedestrian connectivity, urban park spaces, greenway connections, and new streetscapes help to create a sense of place where people will live, work, and play.
Here’s the detail about new RAD businesses, from Forbes’ story:
Those businesses included the West End Market, a grocery store, a sushi restaurant, an as-yet-to-be-named novelty and tattoo shop and a larger restaurant.
Asheville’s River Arts District is changing fast. New restaurants have moved in. A number of artists have been moved out. Nearby neighborhoods are changing, too. And New Belgium Brewing is building a massive new brewery just across the river.
